EpiSoft has been engaged on health ICT projects for the indigenous health community, initially to develop a web-based client and referral management system for an Aboriginal community controlled organisation. This application has been in production since 2006.
During 2008, we were engaged to develop a regional population health management solution for the local Division of General Practice and linked to the client and referral management solution managed by the Aboriginal community controlled organisation on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
This project involved the integration of four web-based applications and several GP software packages for the more effective outcomes tracking and health management of indigenous Australians in the region. A number of GP practices in the region are contributing data from:
HCN's Medical Director 2, Medical Director 3, Genie for Windows, Genie for Mac, Best Practice, Medical Spectrum.
The program went live in late February 2009 with the initial secure data loads occurring from the practices at the time. There are just under 6,000 indigenous patient records in the system and more than 32,000 health care episodes entered at the end of 2012. Medication, vaccination, general clinical measures, Medicare Benefits Schedule items and pathology test records are available for a subset of the patients with a group of practices participating in the broader population health registry program. A number of online reports display the varous health measures in dynamic grids that support rapid data analysis including the ability to filter and group on measures of interest. The secure data upload from practice systems will be replaced by automated integration using secure Web Services in early 2012.
The population health repository is linked via secure web services to the client and referral management system managed by the Aboriginal community controlled organisation and to the core EpiSoft platform for additional data collection by practices.
A number of practices involved in indigenous care provision in the region have also been participating in a smoking cessation study using the EpiSoft platform for online data capture. Smoking specific data are entered by GPs, pharmacists and harm reduction coaches. There were about 150 patients enrolled in the smoking cessation program at the end of 2011 with some excellent quit and harm reduction results being achieved.
